Improving Koala Habitat and Connectivity

in the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac Region

The Project

Title: Improving Koala Habitat and Connectivity in the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac Region

Duration: 2025 -2029

Funding: Queensland Government through funding from the Natural Resource Management Expansion Program (NRMEP)

Summary: As part of the Queensland Government’s investment in Natural Resource Management (NRM) expansion, the LNP committed additional funding to strengthen habitat restoration and environmental projects across regional Queensland. When identifying priority areas, the areas stretching from Koumala North to the Eton Ranges were selected for their strong habitat potential, high connectivity value, and long-term suitability for koala movement and recovery.

Objective:

To strengthen koala conservation by improving habitat condition, expanding suitable habitat, and restoring connectivity across key areas from Koumala to the Eton Range.

Strategy:

This project will improve habitat connectivity in the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac through the below actions:

  • Undertake 54 hectares of weed control to open safe movement corridors for koalas.
  • Plant 3 hectares of koala-friendly revegetation to expand suitable habitat.
  • Install 6 kilometres of protective fencing to promote natural regeneration and protect restored areas.
  • Work with local landholders throughout Koumala North to the Eton Ranges to deliver coordinated on-ground activities, ensuring long-term habitat improvement and connectivity
