Overview: With climate change the number one threat to the Reef, reducing carbon emissions is at the heart of the Reef Islands Initiative. The Whitsundays Healthy Heart project assisted local tourism businesses to measure and reduce their ecological and carbon footprint and offers an opportunity for genuine commitment and sustainable action in our region. This world-leading effort contributed towards the achievement of a Sustainable Destination certification for the Whitsundays.
Key Achievements
- 46 businesses measured their carbon footprint and took steps to reduce their impact.
- Increased awareness of sources of carbon emissions and targeted opportunities to improve environmental impact in the tourism industry.
- Established a network of forward-thinking tourism businesses eager to act on climate change and collaborate in future projects.
