Pioneer Bay seagrass restoration and research

As a subcomponent of the Inshore Resilience project, Reef Catchments is partnering with CQUniversity to restore Zostera muelleri seagrass in Pioneer Bay. By refining "seed ball" techniques and trialling new species outplanting, we are improving coastal connectivity and reef resilience.

Our work

Through the Whitsunday Reef Islands Initiative project (2020-2025), CQUniversity trialled three different techniques for re-seeding seagrass species Zostera muelleri at Pioneer Bay. Through the Inshore Resilience project, we continue with the most effective method – seed balls – to continually refine and improve our results, as well as pursue trials for outplanting a second species, Halodule uninervis.

The Inshore Resilience project is part of the Natural Resource Management Expansion Package, funded by the Queensland Government.
