Mangrove and saltmarsh protection and enhancement

As a subcomponent of the Inshore Resilience project, Reef Catchments is delivering on-ground works to protect high-priority mangrove and saltmarsh sites. By reducing threats like weeds and illegal vehicle access, we are enhancing the resilience of these critical coastal habitats.

Our work

Through 2024-2025, EarthWatch Australia led a citizen science program, guiding Traditional Owners and other local stakeholders on assessments of mangrove and saltmarsh health around the Mackay region. The Inshore Resilience project now funds active on-ground works to protect and enhance at least two of the sites that were identified by the community as high priority.

The Inshore Resilience project is part of the Natural Resource Management Expansion Package, funded by the Queensland Government.
