West Hill Creek Streambank Erosion Remediation and Protection Works

As part of the Queensland Government’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) Riverine Recovery Program, the West Hill Creek project will deliver important streambank erosion remediation and protection works. The project’s key goals are to rehabilitate and restore riverine, wetland, and riparian environments at sites impacted by significant rainfall and flooding events of 2021-2022 severe weather season. The project will reduce erosion along approximately 410m of streambank, preventing fine sediment from entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

The project works will include:

• • The construction of major streambank remediation sites at four sites along a 410m stretch of West Hill Creek.
  • The implementation of remediation strategies including weed control and active revegetation along the top and toe of the bank to improve riparian connectivity and resilience. 
  • Support and enhance local service provider capability and capacity for implementing streambank remediation projects. 

Throughout the region, areas with healthy riparian zones have the highest resilience to extreme weather events as they act as a natural buffer. This project will improve riparian connectivity, increase site resilience, and reduce the likelihood of any continued erosion. The remediation sites are located between and immediately downstream of previous NDRRA works and if not addressed could pose a risk to the integrity of previous works and adjacent agricultural lands. This project will minimise streambank erosion and further reduce fine sediment into waterways and ultimately to the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

The West Hill Creek recovery project is funded by the jointly funded Commonwealth and State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
