High Steaks II – Bull Selection Workshop

Nov 16, 2017 |

Interest in bull genetics has been gaining momentum in our region, with grazers asking for a ‘Bull Selection Workshop’. Last month our Regional Landcare Facilitator, Juliane Kasiske delivered the High Steaks II – Bull Selection Workshop on behalf for the Australian Government National Landcare Programme, in the second get together between Reef Catchments and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Regional Landcare Facilitator, Juliane Kasiske said, “The intention was to enable graziers to make confident decisions in choosing the right bull. Productivity in a grazing system starts with the right genetics of your bull as it sets the potential for upper or lower production limits that your herd can achieve. Your bull determines the performance of your herd and influences weaning rates, survival rates, sale weight and can indirectly complement your grazing management.”

Local Vet and Grazier, Roxanne Morgan explained to local producers why the benefits of using objective data to make informed decisions about the bulls they buy.

23 landholders farming a combined area of more than 500acres across the Mackay, Whitsunday, and Isaac region where determined to attended the Bull Selection workshop in Mackay despite the severe rainfall on the day. Juliane Kasiske said “That alone shows how needed this information is, for graziers to make informed decisions when it comes to buying and or breeding bulls.”

“The graziers that attended the workshop were already very committed when it comes to managing their properties in an environmentally respectful manner while maintaining productive herds. It was inspiring to see their willingness to take their business management approach to the next level.”

Overall, attendee feedback said the workshop as very informative and they appreciated the depth of knowledge shared by Jim Fletcher (DAF) and Roxanne Morgan.

The positive outcome of this workshop was discussed at our regional Grazing Working Group meeting. The group is exploring ways to cater for graziers interested in this topic and deliver further information about genetics when choosing the right bull.
